For a man openly hostile to tie-dyed nostalgia, Bob Dylan's 1987 summer tour with the Grateful Dead was a confounding event indeed. The result on this concert recording is Dylan warbling across the usual Dead groove: neither rock nor roll. No new compositions emerged from the summit, so their repertoire is limited to an unsurprising list of chestnuts ("All Along the Watchtower," "Knocking on Heaven's Door," etc.). Their meandering version of Dylan's "I Want You" would be a vicious parody of the original if it weren't so sadly true. And if these were the stadium tour's best performances, pity anyone who actually sat through one of these concerts with a clear head.

It was the Fourth of July, 1987, at Foxboro Stadium, when parts of this CD where recorded. Those of us who where there might remember the fabulous show put on by Dylan and the Dead. Sure, this wasn't even close to the best performance of their lives, but I still had a good time. It was so hot and humid that day they were spraying the audience down with a fire hose. My girlfriend, Wendy and I weaved our way through the packed in crowd all the way to the very front row. The heat was unbearable. Wendy fainted and flopped over into my arms. Bob Weir and Dylan peered cautiously over the edge of the stage, during "All Along the Watchtower" while Jerry was doing his solo spectacular at the beautiful young red-head, unconscious in the front row. She came to as the strains of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" flowed over the crowd, a full moon rising over the stadium, the show culminating in a huge fireworks display! I love this CD.
